Cenderawasih

The northern margin of the so-called Teluk Cenderawasih (literally Bird of Paradise Bay in the local language), was partially closed in prehistoric times by the islands of Biak and Supiori. This created unique conditions for the development of several endemic fish species in this region, as well as allowing other species usually found in deeper waters in other parts of the archipelago to ascend and thrive in shallower waters. That can be seen today by recreational divers.

The region was also the scene of brutal naval battles during World War II, which left as evidence the remains of ships and planes at depths that are also accessible to recreational diving.

But the star of the routes is, without a doubt, the whale sharks. Attracted by the small anchovies caught in the nets of the large fishing outriggers that fish at night with the help of lamps, these gentle giants have become regular visitors to the area, guaranteeing close encounters with divers and freedivers.
